Services / Specialties:

Richard RJ Friedland, MACP, RCC, can be seen through Bright Star Counselling or The Shop Counselling for Men. My name is Richard “RJ” Friedland, and I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor specializing in working with men. I have extensive experience supporting individuals through addiction and recovery, and I provide both individual and group counselling. I am also trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) for trauma treatment.

I believe strongly that men benefit from specialized, tailored support. Many men face unique pressures, expectations, and challenges when it comes to expressing emotions, asking for help, and navigating difficult life transitions. My goal is to create a space where men feel safe to be honest, vulnerable, and heard—without judgment.

Alongside my clinical work, I also work closely with first responders. As a volunteer firefighter myself, I understand the realities of high-stress environments, trauma exposure, and the long-term impact this work can have on mental health, identity, and relationships. I also bring firsthand experience from having worked in the trades, which allows me to connect authentically with clients who come from blue-collar, hands-on, and physically demanding professions.

In addition to my professional roles, I am also a stepfather, which further shapes my understanding of family dynamics, responsibility, and personal growth. In my work, I combine practical tools with compassionate, grounded care. I support clients in addressing trauma, managing stress and anxiety, improving emotional regulation, repairing relationships, and building healthier coping strategies. Whether working one-on-one or in a group setting, I am committed to helping men develop self-awareness, resilience, and meaningful, lasting change in their lives.
